The festival was an idea that began as a joint venture between business, community, government and Church groups to contribute significantly to the social, economic and spiritual fabric of Toowoomba and the Australian community.

The first-ever AGMF happened in 1999. It was a humble beginning with a mixture of successful and unsuccessful events. In 2001, AGMF re-focused by holding most events in Queen's Park (previously, events were held in multiple venues throughout the city). Since the move to Queen's Park, AGMF has grown enormously each year with 50% growth being experienced in 2004, 25% growth in 2005 and a further 30% in 2006.

Visitors and locals witness the conversion of Queens Park and the Central Business District of Toowoomba into a compact but impressive entertainment precinct, packed with huge tents, stages and attractions. Thousands also choose to camp in the Queens Park site, adding to the atmosphere and their own enjoyment of the Festival. Importantly, the Christian ethos of the event and a focus on safety and security allows parents to relax while both they and thousands of people of all ages immerse themselves in the AGMF experience.
